USW Local 1945 participated in the 2023 Rapid Response Conference held in Washington, D.C. The conference aimed to empower union members by providing them with knowledge on current key issues, strategies to communicate these issues effectively, and skills to engage in impactful actions at various levels of government. The USW Rapid Response program, which was activated during the conference, facilitates swift mobilization to address urgent worker-related concerns, including labor rights, job security, and workers' benefits.

The three-day event included plenary sessions, workshops, and opportunities for networking and collaboration with other local unions. Over 700 United Steelworkers from across the country gathered at the capitol, demonstrating their support and advocating for important initiatives. One of these initiatives was HR 3882, known as the Level the Playing Field Act 2.0, which aims to protect American workers by strengthening trade remedy laws and countering unfair trade practices by China.

The conference also focused on advocating for comprehensive labor reform through the "Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act," which seeks to reinforce workers' rights to unionize and negotiate for improved working conditions. Furthermore, initiatives like the "Tax Fairness for Workers Act" aimed to recognize union workers' contributions to the economy by allowing a tax deduction for union dues and expenses. The "No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act" aimed to prevent employers from taking tax deductions for expenses related to union-busting activities.

Finally, the conference emphasized the importance of protecting retirement security, including not only union-negotiated benefits such as pensions, 401k plans, and healthcare but also social security, Medicare, and Medicaid. These programs were recognized as hard-earned benefits that workers have paid for throughout their careers.

By attending the conference, USW Local 1945 gained valuable insights, enhanced our advocacy skills, and strengthened our commitment to improving the lives of workers and protecting their rights. If you are interested in participating in the Rapid Response Network, please let us know!
